How To Write A Letter Of Resignation

A resignation letter has three parts: The notification with your end date, the thank you, and the hand-off.

The opening of your resignation letter

Open your resignation with the facts: you are resigning from your position with your company, and your last day will be ___.

Dear [Your Boss’ Name],

Please accept this letter as formal notification that I am resigning from my position as [Your Job Title] with [ Your Company Name]. My last day will be [your last day—typically two weeks from the date you give this notice].

The Middle Of Your Resignation Letter

It's a good idea to thank your boss for the opportunity. This doesn't need to be heartfelt (that's why we're providing this handy template for you). Describe two or three things you've enjoyed, learned, or have been a part of at this job. Remember, even though you're excited to be leaving, you may need a letter of reference in the future. The resignation letter is not a time to burn bridges.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to work in this position for the past [amount of time you’ve been there]. I’ve greatly enjoyed and appreciated the opportunities I’ve had to [job responsibility 1, and job responsibility 2]. I’ve learned so much about [responsibility 3] and the [industry] profession, all of which I will take with me throughout my career.

Closing Your Letter Of Resignation

We call this the hand-off. Express your willingness to do your best in the time you have left, and assist with any needed transitions.

During my last two weeks, I’ll do everything possible to wrap up my duties and train other team members. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help with during the transition.

I wish the company continued success.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
