Here’s What You Can Expect
If you’ve ever hesitated to reach out to a recruiter because you weren’t sure about fees or obligations, this post is for you. We want to make it absolutely clear:
You, the job candidate, never pay a recruiter for their services.
The employer (our client) is the one who pays us. If you’re curious how recruiters get paid, you can read more on our blog about how retained executive search engagements work.†
Below, you’ll find what you can expect from working with a recruiter, and why you can do it with confidence.
Why It’s Free to You
-
When a company hires a recruiting firm to fill a role, the company agrees to pay the recruiter (a fee often tied to the role’s compensation or a pre-arranged structure).
-
That means your access to the recruiter’s time, guidance, and advocacy comes at zero cost to you.
-
We have a contractual relationship with our client (the hiring company), not with job seekers.
-
If ever someone asks you to pay a recruiter up front, that’s a red flag.
See our post on retained executive search structures for more details about how and when recruiters get paid.
What You Can Expect from Working with a Recruiter
Here’s what a professional recruiter (like us at SkyWater) should deliver if you choose to engage:
1. Confidential, honest conversations
We’ll start by understanding your career goals, your strengths, your preferences (industry, leadership scope, culture), and anything else important to you. We’ll also be open about what the hiring company is looking for so you can make informed decisions.
2. Market insight & positioning
Because we place candidates across industries and roles, we’ll help you understand where your skills and experience fit best. We’ll advise on how to present your qualifications, set competitive compensation benchmarks, and position yourself relative to market expectations.
3. Resume / profile refinement
We’ll help you sharpen how you tell your professional story, emphasizing the parts that matter to prospective employers and aligning your presentation with the role’s priorities.
4. Coaching & prep
We’ll prep you for interviews, discussing the types of questions to expect, coaching on storytelling and framing, and helping you think through how to articulate impact. We’ll also debrief after interviews, gather feedback, and help you refine your approach for the next rounds.
5. Advocacy & alignment
We act as your liaison with the employer. We’ll present your candidacy in the best light, collate feedback from them, negotiate on your behalf (especially around compensation, start date, and benefits), and work to keep you aligned with opportunity expectations.
6. Transparent communication
We won’t ghost you. Throughout the process, we’ll let you know where things stand, whether your candidacy is moving forward, any hesitations or gaps, and timing expectations. If there are delays on the employer’s side, we’ll do our best to inform you.
7. Respect & confidentiality
You have every right to confidentiality. If you are currently employed or exploring options discretely, we’ll always ask before sharing sensitive information or your identity with an employer. Your trust and privacy are paramount.
What We Don’t Do (and What You Shouldn’t Expect)
-
We don’t charge you a fee (as emphasized above).
-
We don’t pressure you into accepting an offer you’re uncomfortable with.
-
We don’t misrepresent your experience. (Authenticity is the best long-term path.)
-
We don’t guarantee you’ll be hired. While we work hard to align you with roles that suit you, hiring decisions rest with the employer.
-
We don’t ghost or disappear after initial outreach. Communication is part of our service.
